Sunlight falls to the sea It flashes on the billows But buckles under folding waves And pierces the deep As shattered rays I remember Trees performing their rites from shore, Their branches swaying like censers over the water; The blue expanse of sky, an inverse sea, With frothy clouds like crests of slow moving waves; The cool water lapping against the shore, Providing the rhythm for a song of praise. But now I lay on the sea-bed, these memories echo remotely, Unrenewed by fresh sensation, Receding from me like half-forgotten dreams, Energy and light diffuse and scatter; They could never reach me whole After sinking into Sheol, deep calls unto deep. God’s silence resounds in hollow things, in hollow things: In sympathy devoid of understanding, In proximity bereft of presence. In contact without communion. Comforters have come with coffee And a deferent flexion of the neck, Saying, “no one likes to go through things like this.” A reproach in a mug of somber tact, Set before me, so I can smell its odor: “Did you think God favored you above the others?” “Others suffer” – that may be. But in this sea We perish each alone. But I do not sing of resignation – Songs cannot grow on barren ground – My solemn notes, a feeble signal, A cry sent to God, to catch God’s ear: I hope you find me here. I hope you find me here.
